Client Spotlight: Unitron’s uHear hearing test on iPhone

Unitron’s CEO had a brainwave — could people test their own hearing using the iPhone? The company hired us to find out, and if so, build an application to do it. uHear is the result, with more than 300,000 downloads over the first year.

The biggest challenge with this app was to meet the exacting audiometric standards of the company. Unitron makes hearing aids for a business, and has several audiologists on staff. Working with their doctor was fascinating as we designed tests to see how the earphones on the iPhone performed and experimented with audio output on the device until we had it just right to get truly accurate results. It wasn’t easy and required a lot of back and forth but the result was worth it and really gives you an excellent and accurate sense of your individual hearing capabilities.

Graphic designer Tom Auger of Zeitguys designed the brilliant graphics, and we implemented the numerous interactive elements to his highly exacting specifications.

We’re pretty proud of this app, because of the impact it has on people and the polish we were able to achieve in the design and implementation. It’s really a complete audiology test for free with your iPhone.
